Just One More Piece
A poem
Voices frantic, rising into screeches
it’s an emergency, please
Mom please
Can we have a piece of tape?
Sticky toddler hands fumbling
with flimsy gummy slips
Like calls to like.
I remember the allure, too,
the Scotch tape crises
when I was their age
it was all urgent
We had a vision!
This is the young’s preferred tool
for creating, building, fixing
Sure, the adhesive’s flighty
as sparrows seeking
crumbs in the dust,
fearful of being followed
and it’s not strong
enough to fix all that’s broken
But with a little faith and a lot of tape,
kids can accomplish anything
